Sea kayaks can be rented
to fish and explore the lagoon or local guides will be proud to show you
the sights. Belize is blessed with a reef that runs the length of
the country and breaks up big surf before it reaches the shore. The
waves lap gently just a short walk from the front door. For the more
adventurous, snorkel trips to the outer cayes (keys) can be arranged as
can SCUBA and fly and/or bait fishing excursions. Mayan ruin tours
are also available from local guides at reasonable prices.
Placencia Airport
|
Placencia is a quiet village of
friendly people – nightlife can be found, but 10:00 PM is closing time
for most establishments. Small grocery stores sell everything from
liquor (coconut rum – yum!) to local fruit and vegetables. The fishing
co-op sells anything that the fishermen catch that is in season (there
is a season on lobster and conch). Guatemalan merchants display their
goods in Placencia and several shops have varied selections of local handicrafts.
English is spoken in almost every locale so communication won't be an issue.
Sunrise fishing from our beach.
Transportation to and from the village
can be as simple as walking, hitch-hiking, or calling a taxi. Bicycles
and scooters can be rented locally. The airstrip is about a quarter-mile
away (not to worry mon – planes only land during daylight hours!)
A passport is needed to travel to Belize. Come and enjoy! |
